Preparing to run your first race

Running is a sport which almost anybody can do. But once you have got the hang of running round the block or the local park, why not try to add a more competitive edge to your game and enter a race?

Whether it is a 5km fun run or the local marathon, every runner needs to follow the same steps to prepare for a big race. The first thing to do is make sure you have the right kit. If you haven’t already, get yourself a proper pair of running trainers from a professional running shop. The people here will usually check your gait (the way you run) and will suggest which type of shoe is best for you. Having the correct footwear will save you from pain and potential injury in the long run!

Coming up to the day of the race, check that you know where to meet for the start line, and if driving to the venue, check up on parking in that area. The last thing you want is to be frantically searching for a parking spot 5 minutes before the starting gun goes! It is also a good idea to check if there will be any toilet facilities nearby – you will not want to be running with a full bladder.
